it's all about the red trim

Lookie! I actually finished a project! Well, that's a miracle. Honestly I had more trouble mounting the curtain rods than I did making the simple curtains. I need to get more handy with the drill. A valuable, skill, I think.

These curtains are made with that lovely folk print from Superbuzzy that has been all over the place recently (I think they sold out of the multi-color, but the brown is lovely, as is the eggplant). Just before I left NY, I finally caved in to my overwhelming need for Superbuzzy purchases. So awesome. (and oh my, when I popped over there to get the URL I just saw this. oh my. oooooooh my.)

Now, I think there is a distinct possibility that my curtains will catch fire one day. That would be bad. Maybe I should add some ties, so that we can secure the curtains back when cooking. Hmmm...

And here's our wee little kitchen. And when I say wee, I mean wee. That little bit of counter space you see there? Yeah, that's about it. But, looking on the sunny side, it's making us more tidy and efficient in the kitchen. And the lack of dishwasher means we actually do our dishes, rather than leave them sitting around until we have run out of spoons.

Hopefully there will be many more apartment-decoration posts in the next few weeks. I have many ideas simmering, limited only by my insistence that everything be just perfect (impossible to achieve but dang time-consuming to attempt) and a lack of time (due mostly to my own laziness, but it's SUMMER, friends, I'm livin it up).

In other news, Twin and I have re-engaged in our great tennis rivalry. We are fairly evenly matched, so each set is highly exciting. I generally let her win, though. Just to keep the peace. ;)

But here's a question for anyone who is a biologist, naturalist, or bugologist kind of person: why, oh WHY, do mosquitoes love to bite me, but leave my Twin completely alone? This has been the case for years. We used to joke that I am the sweet one, while she is too sour. (Admittedly true, of course, but not a scientific explanation to satisfy my mind.) Regardless of the reason, they do love me. They see me and go nutso. yummy yummy yummy they say. Punch-drunk they are. Perhaps I should be flattered.

I am sorry for being such a blog-flake this summer, but I'm sure to get back into the rhythm of things before too long. Twin has ordered a sundress, and I better get on that before the summer begins winding down into autumn.

Be well friends!

your curtains are so cute - as is your wee kitchen! i just ordered a bunch of superbuzzy myself...yum!

i don't know much about the mosquitoes, but they love jane and me more than kate and fatty. i'll be interested to see if someone knows the answer.

Hi. I've been reading your blog for a while and I thoroughly enjoy it. So glad to see a new sewing project as I'm learning to sew myself.

I'd like to ask you a question, if you don't mind. I just bought a Featherweight 221 off eBay after drooling over them for months. My question is, how do you care for yours? How often do you take it for cleaning and servicing? I know yours belonged to your grandmother (lucky you!) so you must give it some special TLC. Also, do you sew heavyweight fabrics on it? (Sorry, I sneaked in a 2nd question.)

Thanks in advance for your response.

I LOVE your curtains! The red trim is perfect.

I had a stove like that once and two of the burners didn't work. (drove me crazy!) your kitchen photos took me back in time...I had just slightly more counter space than that and no upper cupboards. ooof, that wasn't fun.

ha ha... my twin and i the opposite. the mosquitos love her and hate me...

good luck settling in... and enjoy the rest of your summer!

Love those curtains, and the red trim is just right. And I love that tiny kitchen too. It looks so quaint and cozy.

And about the mosquitos...my daughter has had the same problem her entire life.(I used to tell her the same as you, that she has sweet meat.)It was so bad for her as a child that I had to take her to the Dr. a couple of times - fearing she would really become sick at some point. The Dr. told me the same thing I ended up reading later...that there is a scent within you that is very attractive to them. When she was little I used only repellants withOUT DEET in them, because they were safer, but they didn't work for her at all, yet they worked for me. Now that she's older we both use DEET products. They work great for me, but for her it's just kind of "better than nothing". She still gets a lot of bites, & the Dr. said she's "allergic" to the bites which sounds weird, but her bites turn into big red welts that seldom itch yet stay for weeks, and sometimes leave a scar. Do your bites do that? And do you often get bee stings? I ask that because my daughter has never been bothered by a bee yet she's a mosquito magnet. It's as if her scent is attractive to mosquitos but repels bees.
I'm no scientist but I guess I sound as though I think I am. lol. Hope it helps though.

Red ties would look great--but maybe you could push the curtain across the rod and away from the stove when you're cooking--just to be extra safe. Nothing ruins a good dinner like setting the kitchen on fire.

Hi! I've been reading your blog awhile, but I don't think I've posted here yet. Anyway, the first thing I thought after noticing your cute curtains was "I bet they don't plan on cooking, 'cause those curtains would soon be toast".

As to the skeeters, they rarely ever bite my dh who goes around outside shirtless and in shorts all the time. I can go out with just a tad of my short legs showing beneath my capris and they'll make mincemeat of my ankles. It isn't fair, I tell you.

Actually, you're probably safe until your mother comes to visit and makes barbecue that overflows the pot a little and the grease collects in the little pan below the burner and then she puts corn water on to boil and the grease catches fire.... and you come along at just the right moment and slam a pan lid over it and put it out. By yourself, you're probably safe as houses.
I'm just sayin' is all.
Nice curtains.

Flake away! That's what summer is for! I love the curtains and can't wait to see more decorating progress. Fun!

LOVE the curtains. Nice work! And as for the mosquito thing, you eat a lot of protein. They can smell it. There is this whole public health diatribe I could go on, but just trust me with that explanation. It saves me having to discuss refugee camps and malaria programs.

Your little kitchen is darling, and the curtains look perfect in it!

ahhhh the world of no dishwashers. I live in that world, too. sure forces one to actually get up from the dinner table and DO the dishes...

LOVE the curtains and do see potential fire hazard. Maybe you should make the tiebacks out of that flame-retardant stuff they make children's pajamas out of....just a thought!

ps. your stove is so tiny and cute. does it have a name? looks like it needs one.

"Marmee" cracks me up. She's got to be a really fun Mom. She needs a "spinoff blog". I'm just sayin' is all.
