who knew my elbows were so sharp?

I've had "put elbow patches on most favorite sweater" on my to-do list forever. I'd noticed that the threads were wearing thin. And after getting it back from the cleaners last week, I pulled it on, my most coziest sweater, to feel a bit of a draft at the elbow. Yes, 'twas too true. My elbow was poking straight through.

But this is a sweater to be saved. Must save it! Must darn it, mend it, patch it, clean it, and meticulously de-fuzz it because it is the sweater most special. Wonderfully warm but not bulky, lovely creamy color, given to me by my auntie. I wear this sweater all winter long.

You knitters out there would probably be horrified by my darning job. (Is that even the right terminology? To darn is to mend a knitted piece?) I just kind of tugged the endy bits of the frayed yarn and tied them together in a knot. Then I covered it with a nice cushy wool patch. Because apparently I've got some mean sharp elbows.

  1. The sweater is lovely. I like the cinching in at the waist that keeps it from being too bulky. I'd say you did a beautiful job of patching it up. Nice choice of patch fabric, too.

That's not you modeling the sweater.
How much did you have to pay your sis to be a model?
Nice job on the patches -- they really go with the sweater's look and feel.

  3. ha! this happens to me all the time, but i have freakishly long elbows. take a look the next time you wear something longsleeve and knit and see if your elbows bag it out. mine do, it sucks.

Never darned a thing in my life, so I say if the knot works, go for it. Love the patches!

  8. I'm in the same horrible boat!! My most favorite sweater- a nice deep dark grey full-zip wool cardigan (with pockets no less) has gotten thin in the elbows. Horrendous!! :( So sad. And the cold weather is coming soon. I'm trying to find a good source for moleskin elbow patches... or just buy some good moleskin... could be any fabric, but I saw a few men's sweaters with moleskin elbow-patches. The trick will be to find a good color, and also to figure out how the heck to sew the thing. I guess I could take it to a tailor...

Any and all thoughts are greatly appreciated- you have no idea how hard it is to find any info on patching things online... let alone elbow patches!!

:) Guess it's a throw-away culture these days. Problem is, I haven't found a suitable replacement for my sweater. I love it to death, and well, it pains me to get rid of it. So, I'll try to get it patched well...

    Love the job on yours!
